President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe has commended the government of Nigeria for its assistance to the people of Zimbabwe, who were recently hit by a tropical disaster, Cyclone Idai
Mnangagwa made the commendation when he received a Federal Government Delegation, led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, on Wednesday at the State House in Harare.
“The people of Nigeria and their leadership have realised that their brothers and sisters here in Zimbabwe, visited by Cyclone Idai, needed assistance.
“And in their compassion, they have sent us a plane load of materials, medicines and other materials to give to the people of that area
“Nigeria, some years back, was part of the front line states during the liberation struggle
“And this is demonstrative of that history of friendship and support from Nigeria
“So, to the people of Nigeria, I say the people of Zimbabwe are extremely happy and grateful for the support you have given our people under the circumstances.”
The Zimbabwean leader also congratulated Buhari on his re-election, saying, “I am happy that my brother and colleague won election for the second term as leader of Nigeria.”
Earlier, Onyeama expressed gratitude to the President of Zimbabwe for the warm reception accorded to the Nigerian delegation.
The minister said Buhari had directed him to deliver relief items comprising medicine and medical equipment to the government of Zimbabwe to help the country recover from the devastating effects of Cyclone Idai.
“We are very humbled to be received by His Excellency; I came to extend on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari, the sympathy of the Nigerian people to his Excellency (Mnangagwa) and the people of Zimbabwe over the cyclone, devastation and tragedy that befell this country.
“And it was a manifestation of fraternity and solidarity between our two countries; and I must say that we are overwhelmed by the warm reception by his Excellency.
“We are very humbled to be received by his Excellency and I really consider Zimbabwe my other home.”
