The European Union Election Observation Mission’s report on the 2023 general election in Nigeria has been described by the Labour Party (LP) as evidence of collusion between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the All Progressives Congress-led government.

In a press statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, on Sunday night, the LP responded to the Federal Government’s dismissal of the EU Mission report.

According to the statement, “The Labour Party’s leadership is deeply disappointed by the Federal Government’s attempt to discredit the European Union’s conclusion on the 2023 General Election, questioning the methods used to reach the conclusion. This belated response by the government, days after the report was submitted, is feeble and serves as an ineffective damage control measure.”

The statement further highlighted that the EU’s report is just one of many submissions from international observers who have deemed the election outcome a sham, failing to represent the will of the Nigerian people.

“The Labour Party stands firmly by the EU observation mission’s position. We have consistently maintained that this election was heavily rigged in favor of the APC and its candidate. The government’s response is an afterthought and a futile attempt to mask the evident truth. Even those who cannot see or hear clearly are aware that this election was manipulated,” the statement emphasized.

The party stressed the abundance of evidence supporting their claims, which even the most oblivious and impaired can perceive.

“We hope that the judiciary will dispense justice impartially and without bias, for the sake of our nation and future generations. Nigerians already know the rightful winner of the 2023 presidential election, and no amount of slander, denial, or rebuttal can alter the fact that the ruling party lacks the mandate of the electorate.”

The statement also raised concerns about the independence of INEC, stating, “We must acknowledge that INEC’s position is a product of active collusion with the Federal Government, resulting in the denial of the electorate’s rights. This blatant display indicates that INEC is not truly independent; its actions are dictated by the government’s whims. However, Nigerians are relying on the judiciary to uphold justice. That’s where our stance lies.”
