The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has granted approval for a name change to the Nigeria Professional Football League, which will now be known as the Nigeria Premier Football League. This decision was ratified during the NFF’s 79th general assembly held in Uyo on Sunday, September 10, 2023.

In anticipation of the forthcoming 2023-2024 season, the newly appointed NPFL board had previously altered the league’s name to the Nigeria Premier Football League and also unveiled a fresh league logo without securing prior approval from the NFF. In response, the NFF issued a statement cautioning the board, emphasizing that the authority to endorse such modifications rests solely with the football governing body. Consequently, the matter was brought forward and addressed during the general assembly.

In an official communique following the assembly, the NFF declared, “The congress has officially endorsed the name change of the Nigeria Professional Football League to the Nigeria Premier Football League.”

The commencement of the 2023-2024 NPFL season, originally scheduled to kick off with a match between 3SC and Plateau United in Ibadan on Saturday, has been postponed. This delay arises from what the board of directors cited as sponsorship-related requirements. A new commencement date will be announced in due course.

Enyimba Football Club of Aba, the current league champions, will have ample time this season to defend their title, as they have been eliminated from the preliminary stage of the CAF Champions League.
